FOND DU LAC, Wis. (Jan. 24, 2012) – Mercury Racing, a division of Mercury Marine, has been awarded the 2011 Environmental Award for Economic Feasibility and Sustainability by the Union International Motonautique (UIM). The UIM is the world governing body for all power boating activities.

The UIM Environmental Award recognizes outstanding environmental leaders, whether individuals or organizations that have exemplified inspiration, vision, innovation and leadership in safeguarding water and the environment through all types of power boating activities. Among the main selection criteria are innovation, significance, practicality, usability, economic feasibility and environmental benefit.

The Fond du Lac, Wis., based company was selected for its development and production of low-emissions engines for the greening of outboard powerboat racing worldwide.

“Mercury customers, myself included, want to boat on clean water and in a healthy environment. Mercury Racing showcases our environmentally responsible technologies through powerboat racing and performance boating worldwide,” said Mercury Racing President Fred Kiekhaefer.

“That boat was a rocket sled!” said Reggie Fountain about his first boat with Team Mercury.

Reggie began racing in 1954. He was 14. He started in B class hydros and runabouts. When I asked about engines, “I’ve always used nothing but Mercury’s….My first race engine was a Super 10 Hurricane with Quincy straight pipes. They were very loud. The hydro ran 60-70 mph which was pretty fast back then,” said Reggie.

Reggie claims the first thing he wanted after law school was to race. He bought a tunnel boat in 1968. “It was a twin-engine, 21-foot Glastron…I did pretty well at local races. You could tell the difference between independent boats like mine and the ones from the factories,” said Reggie. “My boat weighed 775-780 lbs, less driver. Joe Felder [on Glastron's factory team] had an identical rig – but much lighter at 515 lbs.” Reggie saw the advantage of factory support and the need to build a factory network.

Joe Felder destroyed his Glastron in a crash at Havasu. So Glastron declared Reggie as their new factory driver. Reggie continued to network, becoming friends with Team Mercury driver Jim Mertin Sr. “Jim would supply…worn-out Mercury factory engines. My boat ran better…than it did with the Mercury’s supplied by Glastron.”

Livorsi has developed a navigation light with powerful LED lighting within a rugged low-profile housing. These popular LED Navigation Lights are used by performance, work boat and government boats a like.

As you know, LED lights outlast and out shine regular incandescent bulbs. LED lights use up to 90% less energy; these Livorsi nav lights only consume 1/10th of an amp at 14 volts. This means a longer life and less rigging time switching out lights. These lights are to be used on any vessel up to 65 feet and have a visibility of 2 nautical miles.

These lights are designed to be mounted on a vertical surface, to allow the light pattern to be unobstructed from view. These LED Nav Lights flush mount onto the fiberglass surface for a seamless uniform look.

Made of 316 marine grade stainless steel, a highly anti-corrosive metal. This grade of steel has an increased resistance to corrosion, perfect for the marine environment.

A recent discovery of classic photos of the Team Mercury outboard tunnel boat race team rekindled my curiosity of the outboard factory war era when Mercury and OMC (Outboard Marine Corporation – parent company of the Johnson and Evinrude brands at the time) battled for bragging rights (and sales) across the globe.

I thought it would be interesting to interview the team drivers to hear first hand what it was like racing for Team Mercury.

“Those were the golden years of tunnel competition,” the first words spoken by Bill at the start of our phone interview regarding Team Mercury. “Back then, winning prestigious events such as the 6-hours of Paris or 3-hours of Amsterdam had an direct impact on European outboard sales!”, Bill said

Starting in 2006, a twice-yearly event at the Westgate River Ranch was held as a central gathering for performance boaters. What made the River Ranch event such a success was that everything was located on the same property - hotel, restaurant, launch ramp, and parking. Everybody is together and the result was awesome boating during the day and crazy partying all night. It's incredible fun.

The River Ranch is a giant 'dude ranch' located in central Florida which makes it an ideal location for any boater in Florida, but this event is big enough for people that are out of state to consider attending. Usually over 100 boats are in attendance and many times we host a small photo shoot for anybody that was a photo of their boat posted on the site, or a print.

With Livorsi’s GPS Pulse Antenna, You’ll Never Need To Calibrate Your Speedometer Again

Convert your electronic speedometer into a GPS driven speedometer with this GPS Pulse Antenna. The antenna receives GPS satellite signals and outputs the information to an 8,000 or 16,000 pulse signal to drive your existing electronic speedometer.

This fast update antenna receives ten (10) GPS signals per second, driving your electronic speedometer to display your actual speed (featuring virtually no pointer lag) and it tracks mileage. This universal antenna is truly a stand alone device, as it does not require any connections to the transmission. There is no mechanical to electrical sender device. It has no moving parts; it only needs an open view of the sky. You do not need to route any wires though the firewall – installation is a snap! Regardless of what modifications you have done or will do to your ride (i.e. tire size changes for drag racing or off-roading, gear ratio replacement, etc), never again will you need to calibrate your speedometer. No more measuring miles on the road, driving, pushing buttons OR completing complex math to figure what switches to turn on and off. Simply wire this in, turn it on, and drive!
